Running time of mail, express and local trains in Eastern Railway's different divisions have been reduced by five to 45 minutes owing to completion of doubling of lines and improvement in the signalling system.
"With the completion of doubling between Bandel and Katwa, Krishnagar upto Plassey, Lalgola to Jiaganj in the suburban sections of Sealdah division and Tinpahar to Pirpainthi in two stretches of Malda division, eight mail/express and 17 passenger trains have been speeded up saving time between five to 45 minutes," ER general manager R K Gupta told reporters here.
Gupta said in the Bandel-Katwa section, 28 local trains have been speeded up by five to 45 minutes, while in the Sealdah division, 20 EMU locals between Sealdah and Diamond Harbour and seven locals between Sealdah and Laxmikantapur have been speeded up to save five to eight minutes.

"Security of passengers have been augmented with addition of 1,900 RPF constables apart from 90 lady constables," he said.
Gupta said 104 trains of the Eastern Railways are escorted by the RPF personnel.
"Lady constables are deployed in 14 ladies' special Matribhumi EMU trains along with their male counterparts to ensure safety and security of women passengers," he said.
Gupta said the ER has introduced 90 trips of special trains to different destinations during Durga Puja, Diwali and Chhath Puja, thus offering over 2.14 lakh berths for passengers.
