To encourage innovations it is essential to link academia and manufacturing industry in the country, said R Chidambaram, principal scientific advisor to the Government.

"At our stage of development we must link up...Start of with the process of enhanced interaction of academia and industry.

"Create such networks in which Indian Science and Technology system start with manufacturing industry a new step to get together so that the best practices of industry could be exchanged," Chidambaram said today.

He was speaking at the Indo-German Science and Technology Center Workshop on 'Strategies and Concepts for Advanced Manufacturing' here.

Chidambaram said in United States there was a report on National Network of Manufacturing Innovations that focused on linking manufacturing innovation institutes.

Referring to this, he added, "All the institutes that are into manufacturing innovations (industry) with a common goal but that are unique should be brought together through connectivity like the Internet.

"Industry academia and government (should) partner to leverage existing resource, collaborate and co-invent to nurture manufacturing innovation and accelerate commercialisation, creating robust international innovation eco-system," he said adding that India should also adopt this practice.

The senior scientist said this was important because of the growing scope of inter-disciplines in the field of manufacturing.
