Police have seized 360 cartons of liquor, worth Rs 16 lakh, in Kairana in Shamli district while the consignment was being transported from Haryana to poll-bound Uttar Pradesh, police said today.

A truck containing the cartons of liquor was intercepted at Yamuna bridge check post at Kairana in Shamli district yesterday evening, Circle Officer of Police Bhushan Verma said.

The liquor was being smuggled from neighbouring Haryana where alcohol is cheaper than Uttar Pradesh, police said.

Police have intensified vigil to prevent liquor smuggling ahead of the February-March Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh.

A case has been registered and a search to nab the accused is on, Verma said.
