A live heart was transported from a hospital in Gurgaon to another in Delhi, a distance of about 32 km in 25 minutes through a green corridor.
The journey started at 1.54 AM last night at Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI) in Gurgaon and ended at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute (FEHI), Delhi at 2.10 AM.
"This has been made possible because of the support from the police departments of (Delhi and Gurgaon)," said Jasdeep Singh, Zonal Director, FMRI.
The donor, a 24-year-old man, was brought to FMRI on January 30 after he suffered stroke. Despite efforts by the doctors, he could not be saved and was declared brain dead on Thursday.
The family was counselled and they agreed to donate their son's organs. His heart was transplanted in a 44-year-old man from Meerut who was admitted at FEHI.
His liver and the left kidney were transplanted in a 53-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman, respectively. The donor's right kidney was sent to AIIMS, where it was implanted in a patient. His corneas were sent to Nirmaya Eye Bank in Gurgaon.
"It is heartening to note the positive change happening in our country towards organ donation," Dr Avnish Seth, Director, Fortis Organ Retrieval and Transplant (FORT) initiative.
