Over a dozen women prisoners at a jail in this eastern Pakistani city were rushed to hospital when they fell ill after eating contaminated food, officials said today.

According to reports, a lizard fell into the food prepared for women prisoners at Kot Lakhpat Jail yesterday. Authorities stopped serving the food when the condition of some women deteriorated.

They were taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors said they were now out of danger.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Prisons) Malik Mubashar said a departmental inquiry had been launched and a report would be submitted within 24 hours.

"The incident apparently happened when food was being distributed among women prisoners. A lizard had fallen into one of three cauldrons of chicken curry. All the cauldrons were disposed of," he said.

Supreme Court Chief Justice-designate Tassaduq Hussain Jillani has taken suo moto notice of the incident and sought a report from officials.
