A local BJP leader was shot at and injured allegedly for refusing to pay extortion money here, police said today.

Two people, including one who runs a nearby shop, opened fire on Vivek Agarwal, vice president of mandal level unit of the BJP, when he was closing his shop on Shahjahanpur road under Baradari police station area last night, police said, adding that they fled with cash.

Agarwal was admitted to a near by private hospital, police said.

The family members of the BJP leader have alleged that one of the assailants Rinku had demanded extortion money from him and had threatened of dire consequences on refusal.
 

City Superintendent of Police Rajiv Mehrotra said a case has been registered against the duo for demanding extortion money and opening fire on Agarwal.
