A large number of people hailed a Kolkata court for convicting a Bangladeshi man for raping a septuagenarian nun during a dacoity at a Convent here in 2015.

The authority of Ranaghat Convent of Jesus and Mary did not talked to the media on the conviction of Nazrul Islam by Additional Session Judge Kumkum Sinha.

But a large number of people here said they were happy with the conviction of Islam.

Lata Biswas, a 72-year-old woman whose home is near the convent said she was happy with the conviction of Islam.

Debasish Mondal, a local resident said he was happy with the conviction. He demanded exemplary punishment be given to Islam for the heinous crime.

Kakali Biswas, a teacher of the convent said "Rapist (Islam) should be given death sentence and the other robbers should be given life imprisonment."

Another local resident Mita Mondal demanded the rapist should be sentenced to life imprisonment.

A former student of the Ranaghat Convent, Medha Chakraborty said, "I would be happy if the rapist is hanged to death."

Additional Sessions Judge Kumkum Sinha convicted Islam for raping the nun.

The quantum of punishment will be pronounced tomorrow.
