A local train with modified seating arrangement to accommodate more passengers made its maiden run in Mumbai suburban section today, a Central Railway official said.

This suburban train made its first trip from Badlapur station at 12.05 pm and reached Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) at 1.55 pm.

In this modified rake, all the three-seater seats adjacent to the doorway have been removed to create extra space for the standing passengers.

The seating arrangement has been revamped following instructions of the committee formed by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu for ensuring passengers safety on suburban trains in Mumbai section.

"We ran the first service of the modified rake between Badlapur and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) today. Now, as per the direction by the panel members, we will seek feedback of the commuters," CR spokesperson A K Singh said.

The feedback of the commuters will be given to the committee members that would take a final call on the matter.

This modified rake is capable of carrying 336 additional passengers because of removal of seats, the official said.

"If passengers give their nod to this modified seating arrangement, then CR administration can change the arrangement in all the coaches," another senior Central Railway (CR) official said.

According to the official, no changes in seating arrangements had been done in motor coaches, ladies compartments, handicapped & luggage compartments of this local train.
