An assistant locomotive driver of the Indian Railways was injured after being thrashed by the Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel on board the Howrah-Amritsar Express today.

Superintendent of Police (Railway) Upendra Kumar Sinha said the incident happened near Patna, when a passenger complained to the GRP escort party that one person was occupying his berth. When the police personnel asked him, he introduced himself as assistant locomotive driver Niroj Kumar.

"An argument broke out when Kumar was asked to show his ticket. There was scuffle and he was beaten up by the train escort personnel. He got down at Danapur station, where some other railway personnel were waiting. The GRP men also got down and there was again some clash between both the groups," Sinha said.

The Railway SP said Kumar has lodged a complaint with the police against the three GRP men at Danapur station about the incident and has been hospitalised for treatment.

On the other hand, the escort personnel have lodged a complaint against Kumar at Buxar railway station.

"FIR will be lodged in the case. The three errant escort personnel have been called to the police lines for better access. They had no mandate for beating anybody. We are investigating the matter and they will be suspended if found guilty," Sinha said.
