Lok Adalat in Chandigarh clears nearly 60 cases

As part of the National Lok Adalats being held across the country, nearly sixty cases were today disposed of and a settlement amount of about Rs 20 crore was disbursed by debts recovery tribunals here today.

The Lok Adalat here was inaugurated by Justice Ranjit Singh, chairperson of Debts Recovery Appellate Tribunal (Delhi), and was attended by nearly 1,000 litigants borrowers/ guarantors apart from bankers from states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and UT Chandigarh, a release issued by DRT, Chandigarh, said here.

Justice Singh in his address emphasised on the importance of Lok Adalats and stressed that this system can also save the litigants from unnecessary expenditure on litigation besides helping in reducing pendency of cases in the courts.
 

Referring to problems faced by DRTs, he said that though these are contributing to the economy of nation in the shape of income through court fee and recovery of public money, yet it was facing acute shortage of budget due to which DRTs were unable to pay salary to its staff.

Lok Adalats were organised across Punjab including in Amritsar.
