Officers and staff of the Lok Sabha Secretariat have donated a day's salary towards the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan today called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and handed over a cheque for Rs 14 lakh as the contribution towards the Fund.

The Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) was established in 1948 with public contributions to assist displaced persons from Pakistan.

The resources of the PMNRF are now utilised primarily to render immediate relief to families of those killed in natural calamities such as floods, cyclones and earthquakes, and to victims of the major accidents and riots.

The fund consists entirely of public contributions and does not get any budgetary support.
