A press statement issued by British officials said the Mayor was concerned about the newly introduced restrictions on students visas such as limiting a student's right to work during and after their studies.
Though Johnson did not mention this in his speech, the statement said he felt that it may be having damaging impact on the city's reputation and economy.
He has also written to UK Home Secretary Theresa May in this regard. "As Mayor I will do all I can to promote London as a place that is open for business and open to the brightest talent in the world," the Mayor was quoted as saying.
"International students not only bring bright ideas that cement the reputations of our leading universities, they have huge power that boosts the UK economy," he said.
He also called London one of the most safest city in the world and cited its varied aspects like smooth transport system and green space which help to attract visitors from all around the world.
