Instead of looking at opportunities to serve the Western countries, there are enough problems in India that can be solved either through technology or by engineering knowledge, top official of the National Association of Software Companies (Nasscom) today said.

"Many times in the technology business we have really looked ourselves as an industry which really serves the Western world. I think you can really flip that over," Nasscom Chairman Krishnakumar Natarajan said.

He was speaking at the inauguration of seminar -- Bridge 2014, organised by ICT Academy established by the Tamil Nadu government.

"I think there are enough of local problems in India which can be solved either through technology or through engineering knowledge which people have. Once you solve the local problem in India, I think you can really take that solution on to a global scale," he said.

"I am really talking of an idea about the knowledge you gained at your institution to solve a local problem and use that experience at global level," he said. I think that is the opportunity and thats what will help us capture a significant part of USD 1.3 trillion market," he added.

The key role in really enabling younger generations is not just think in terms of a part of technology staff of (big IT companies like) Google or Intel but saying why should I not create my enterprise, why should I not be an employer rather than employee, Natarajan said.

Creating software products is going to be another big opportunity. "Just for India alone, at NASSCOM we anticipate that by 2020 the software products industry would be USD 80 to USD 100 billion," he said

"India is a great market. Because no other country has a size of its mobile users which is about 600 million mobile users. Close to one-third of them are smart phone users which really represents a market which you can really tap into. Internet and Mobile is going to be a big opportunity," he said.
