Loose cigarette sale illegal under Legal Metrology Act

Sale of loose cigarettes is illegal under the Legal Metrology Act 2015, a Punjab health department spokesperson said today.

The state had earlier banned sale of loose cigarettes or tobacco and flavoured or scented chewable tobacco products, E-Cigarettes under Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), he said.

As per the 'Global Youth Tobacco Survey, 2009', 14.6 per cent of the youth in the country, of the age group of 13-15 years, consume tobacco in some form or other, the spokesperson said.

More than 70 per cent of sale of Cigarettes is as single sticks, he said.
