Lorry driver sentenced for negligent driving

A local court has sentenced a lorry driver to two years imprisonment for his negligence in driving following which the vehicle overturned on the Ghat Road in Yercaud in the district killing 12 persons besides causing injuries to 50 persons in September 2005.

The accident occurred when a group of 75 people from Periyar Nagar in Chinna Kollapatti were returning from a temple on the Salem-Yercaud Ghat Road in a lorry.

Twelve person died and 50 others injured in the accident.

Salem Judicial Magistrate Puveyarasu sentenced the driver Narasimmavarman to two years imprisonment besides imposing a fine of Rs 1600 yesterday.
