Loss of over Rs 64 cr to school infrastructure in floods: Govt

Floods have caused damage to the tune of Rs 64 crore to the infrastructure of school education department in Jammu region, where nearly 1,400 schools have been damaged.

"An estimated loss of Rs. 64.11 crore has been caused to the Education Department on account of damage to school buildings in this division," Secretary, School Education Department, Nirmal Sharma said.

Sharma, who reviewed the losses caused to schools of education department due to floods in Jammu, said, "The number of fully damaged and partially damaged schools in the entire Jammu division is 191 and 1,307 respectively."

She took stock of the damage caused to school buildings and other infrastructure by the recent floods that wreaked havoc in the entire state.
 

The Secretary directed the concerned officers to obtain a certificate from the Public Works Department authorities regarding the safety of the schools before the students are allowed to resume classes in such partially damaged schools.

She said all affected schools have started functioning again.
