Unhappy over the human rights situation in the country despite presence of various laws, NHRC Chairman Justice KG Balakrishnan today said a lot of improvement needed to be done.
"Despite the laws in place and the best efforts of the National Human Rights Commission, the situation of human rights in the country does not present a colourful picture and a lot needs to be done," he said.
Balakrishnan was inaugurating a three-day camp of the commission here.

Noting that NHRC is making continuous endeavour to promote culture of human rights in the country, he said such camps were important and the NHRC has been visiting various states in this connection.
It is also monitoring issues relating to socio-political, cultural and economic rights as well as implementation of various welfare-oriented flagship programmes, he said, adding that such visits help the commission in disposing of long-pending cases and sensitising officials.
Discussions will be held with NGOs to know issues and problems relating to human rights in the state.
During the camp here, 95 cases will be taken up for hearing.
Other NHRC members and representatives of the state government were also present on the occasion.
