SI Issac Samuel attached to Anna Nagar Police station was suspended for being slack despite being informed prior about the May 1 blast, in which the bomb was kept in a bicycle and it was abandoned near an auditorium, police said.

The explosive substance kept in the carrier box of the cycle had exploded on May 1, causing a flutter and panic ahead of the two-day BJP meet commencing on May 10 to be addressed by BJP leader L K Advani, party chief Nitin Gadkari and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi during the ongoing Chithirai festival of the famous temple of Goddess Meenakshi.

Police said the security guard at the auditorium had informed the SI that a cycle was lying abandoned near the auditorium and he was suspicious about it, but no action was taken on it.

Had the SI taken immediate action, the blast could have been avoided, the City Police commissioner said and ordered his suspension for being "careless and negligent".
