A 26-year-old man was killed and an elderly woman critically injured in a major fire spread by explosion of an LPG cylinder at a residential building near J J Hospital in South Mumbai today.

Initially, a minor blaze started on the second floor of the four-storey Suleman Building no. 81, apparently due to a short circuit, and spread after the explosion of cylinder, a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official told PTI.

The building is located on Maulana Shaukat Ali Road.

"Four fire engines, three water jetties, one ambulance and an additional deputy fire officer, along with his team, were deployed at the spot. By the time fire officers reached there, the residents had managed to come out of the building, except two," he said.

The deceased has been identified as Amreen Qureshi and the injured as Sajida Kazi Damani (65) whose condition is critical.

Though the fire has been brought under control it is yet to be put out completely.
