Opposition Congress today sought transfer of Punjab DGP S S Saini to ensure free and fair Lok Sabha polls in the state.

"I on behalf of the Congress party had sought transfer of Sumedh Singh Saini, IPS, presently posted as DGP, Punjab to ensure free and fair elections in the state of Punjab, in view of the instruction issued by the Election Commission in January 2014, vide which an officer against whom any criminal case is pending before any court of law must be kept away from election duty," state Congress spokesman Sukhpal Singh Khaira wrote to the Chief Election Commissioner.

Khaira, who released a copy of the letter to the media, mentioned a two-decade-old case which pertains to alleged involvement of Saini, the then SSP of Ludhiana, in the kidnapping and murder of three persons in Ludhiana.

"He is facing trial before Special Judge, CBI, Delhi... this fact has been pointed out by me in the previous letter sent to the Election Commission," he wrote.

"In order to ensure free and fair elections in Punjab, the Congress demands removal of Sumedh Singh Saini from his present post of DGP...It is also pointed out that the impartiality of CEO V K Singh needs to be examined to maintain dignity, honour and decorum of his office," the Congress spokesman said.
