The Allahabad High Court today dismissed a bunch of writ petitions challenging notifications issued by the Uttar Pradesh government for acquisition of land for the proposed construction of Lucknow-Agra Expressway.
A Division Bench comprising Justice Krishna Murari and Justice P K Srivastava turned down petitions filed by a number of farmers belonging to Farrukhabad district who had challenged notifications dated and October 19, 2014 and October 30, 2014.
The farmers had contended that the state government had not given the aggrieved farmers an opportunity for hearing as provided under Section 5 of the Land Acquisition Act.
The court, however, was of the view that the proposed construction of highway - for which land was being acquired by way of the impugned notifications - was in "larger public interest".
