Women in distress can now look for fast police assistance in Ludhiana as police in the industrial hub of Punjab has come up with a mobile application to help them from eve teasing or harassment.

Mobile app 'Stree Samman', the first-of-its-kind application developed by police in Punjab, will enable women to send message to the nearest police station and three members of her family by either shaking the mobile or pressing a button when they are in trouble.

The multi-feature app to be launched this Monday will initially be available on Android-based mobile phones.

"This is the first women safety mobile app developed by police in Punjab," Commissioner of police, Ludhiana, Paramraj Singh Umranangal said today.

Fourteen women police teams, led by assistant police commissioner Gurpreet Kaur Purewal, have been formed for this purpose which will be deputed at vulnerable areas in order to provide assistance to women in trouble, he said.

The app will also help girls or women facing any emergency by providing directions to the nearest police station and important phones numbers of police officers, official said.

Officials also said the app will have the provision to enable girls or women to upload picture of those areas where they feel unsafe.

"The mobile app has been developed by Ludhiana police and it will formally be launched on December 21," he said.

The Commissioner said the police had been acting tough against hooligans who were engaged into eve teasing in Ludhiana.
