M T Vasudevan Nair gets Deshabhimani award

Eminent Malayalam novelist, filmmaker and screenplay writer M T Vasudevan Nair has been selected for the first Deshabhimani award for his contributions to social and cultural field of the state.

The award instituted by Deshabhimani daily, the CPI(M) mouthpiece, as part of its entry into 75th year of publication, carries a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and a citation.

The award would be presented at a function to be held at Kozhikode in February next year, a release said here today.

A Janpith laureate, Nair (82) has made immense contributions to Malayalam cinema as script writer and director and many of his works are considered all-time classics.
 

Starting from "Murappennu" in 1964, Nair had penned over 50 screen plays, mostly based on his own short stories.

His directorial debut "Nirmalayam" in 1973 won the national award for best feature film and brought the Bharat award for P J Antony, who essayed the central role.
