The Madras High Court today ordered issue of notice to Director General of Police on a PIL seeking direction to ban community-based 'guru poojas' and caste-based rallies in the state.

The First Bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Kumar Agrawal and Justice M Sathyanarayanan, upon hearing the PIL, directed the DGP to reply.

The petition filed by journalist Varaaki submitted that public and private property worth crores of rupees were being destroyed or damaged during these caste-based meetings and sought a direction from the court to impose a ban on it.

Referring to Allahabad High Court's judgement, which has banned caste-based rallies, the petitioner claimed his representations to authorities seeking ban on community-based 'guru poojas' did not elicit any reply and hence he filed the plea.
