Jammu and Kashmir government today ordered a magisterial inquiry into the death of a youth allegedly during the firing incident at the end of polling for the Srinagar Parliamentary constituency.

"An enquiry has been ordered to look into the death of Bashir Ahmad (Bhat) of Gratabal locality allegedly during the firing incident at Nawa Kadal in downtown Srinagar on April 30," Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Shailendra Kumar said.

He said Srinagar District Magistrate Farooq Ahmad Shah has been appointed as inquiry officer and was asked to submit his report along with recommendations within 15 days.

Police said the 24-year-old youth was killed when security forces allegedly opened fire to chase away stone-pelting protesters after a mob tried to snatch the service rifle of a jawan, a charge denied by local residents who claimed that the deceased was shot without any provocation.

The killing of the youth sparked tension in the city, prompting authorities to clamp an indefinite curfew in parts of interior city to maintain law and order.
