Iran says a magnitude-5.5 earthquake has jolted a sparsely populated district some 800 kilometres southeast of Tehran.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency says the quake struck around 2:56 pm today with an epicentre in the town of Sirch.

In 2013, a magnitude-6.1 quake killed at least 37 people in an area of the same province where Friday's quake struck.

Iran experiences frequent earthquakes. In 2003, a magnitude-6.6 earthquake killed some 26,000 and flattened the historic city of Bam.
