A block development officer was caught for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe to release money for the construction of a well, a Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau official said Sunday.

BDO Sunil Wamanrao Ahire had demanded Rs 10,000 as bribe from a person who had applied for a grant from the Yeola Panchayat to construct a well under the government's Employment Guarantee Scheme, the official said.

The grant had been sanctioned by the Panchayat Samiti and Ahire demanded the bribe to release its second instalment, he informed.

"Following a complaint, a trap was laid Saturday at a tea stall on the Yeola-Nashik Road and Ahire was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe of Rs 10,000," he said.

A case has been registered and further probe was underway, the official added.
