In a major relief to around 55,000 homeopathic doctors in Maharashtra, the state cabinet today decided to allow them to prescribe allopathic medicines, subject to certain conditions which include taking a one-year allopathy course.

"We welcome the decision. The government has addressed a long-pending demand of the homeopathic doctors," Dr Narendra Kale and Dr Sameer Dalwai of the NCP's doctors cell said, reacting to the decision.

"We had been asking the government to allow us to practise and prescribe allopathic medicines in the interest of the patients during emergencies," Dr Kale said.

"This decision will help patients, specially those in rural areas," state NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said.

Dr Arun Bhasme, head of the the Anyay Nivaran Sangharsh Samiti, also thanked the state government for the decision.
