A 26-year-old businessman from Nallasopara in Vasai here has allegedly been receiving extortion calls since July 5 asking him to pay Rs five crore, police said today.

According to police, the businessman has been receiving several calls on his cellphone since July 5 where the caller identified himself as a shooter from the gang of gangster-politico Munna Bajrangi, asking him to keep the money "ready".

An offence under sections 385 (Putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion) and 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the IPC has been registered with Tulinj Police station after the businessman lodged a complaint with the police late last night.

The caller further warned that if the extortion money was denied then the businessman would be killed in the same fashion as was builder Rajesh Singh, the complaint stated.

The local builder was gunned down outside his office by two unidentified bike-borne assailants in November 2014.

Police are trying to trace the unidentified caller.
