The Maharashtra cabinet today recommended the name of senior counsel Ashutosh Kumbhakoni as the state's new Advocate General (AG).

Kumbhakoni's name has been recommended to the Governor C Vidyasagar Rao and he would start working as the next AG after a formal approval from the Governor.

The key post fell vacant after former Advocate General Rohit Deo was appointed as a Bombay High Court judge last week.

Deo had been formally appointed as the state AG in December last year. Prior to that, Deo worked as the acting AG after Shreehari Aney resigned following a controversy over his support for statehood for Vidarbha region.

An official from the Governor's office said that the the Raj Bhavan has received the file and the Governor is expected to give his nod to the appointment by this evening.
