Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today attacked the Congress over "intolerance" and accused it of "misusing" Constitution to impose Emergency and put people in jails.

"The party which ruled for more than 60 years had misused the provisions of constitution and put thousands of people in jails during Emergency in 1975-76. The Congress has no right to talk about intolerance," Fadnavis said in the Legislative Assembly during a discussion on Constitution in context of B R Ambedkar's 125th birth anniversary year celebrations.

"The Dalit leader had said that if Constitution is good but people governing it are not then it does not serve the purpose," the CM said.

Fadnavis also criticised returning of awards by prominent people from various fields.

"Where were they when a professor's hand was chopped off in Kerala and members of a Dalit family were killed a few years back," he said referring to massacre of dalits in Khairlanji village in Bhandara district of Maharashtra in 2006.
