A Congress leader has demanded that the Nashik-based Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) be named after former state chief minister, the late Vasantdada Patil.

State Congress General Secretary Yashwant Happe, who was a close aide of Patil, in a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also mentions a reported move to name the varsity after the late Gopinath Munde even as he urges that MUHS be named after Patil.

"Vasantdada was instrumental in setting up a chain of non- aided medical and engineering colleges in the state to strengthen the technical and medical education field.

"The university (MUHS) came up in 1999 to ensure better management of health sciences curriculum," Happe told Fadnavis.

"Vasantdada's birth centenary year starts from November 16, 2016, and naming the university in his memory would be a befitting tribute to him," he said.

"There were media reports about the government's move to name the varsity after late Gopinath Munde. Munde's name can be given to any project which is linked to his area of social and political work. We have no objection and will support any such endeavour," adds Happe.

The MUHS offers undergraduate and post-graduate courses, including Ph.D, in all branches of the health sciences.
