Maharashtra Congress will organise an agitation in Pimpri Buti village in the district, where a farmer's 55-year-old widow committed suicide.

The party said it would demand complete loan waiver for farmers in the state.

The farmer widow Shanta Tajne from the village had committed suicide on June 10, barely 100 days after Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met her and assured of his government's support.

"The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), under the leadership of president Ashok Chavan will hold an agitation to demand total crop loan waiver to farmers starting from Pimpri Buti village," former MPCC chief Manikrao Thakre told reporters here today.

Thakre visited the village and met the kin of the deceased.

"If the state government continues to adopt anti-farmer stance, the ongoing suicide spree would never be controlled. Therefore, the party has decided to launch a state-wide agitation from Pimpri village to stress for its demand.

"The CM has assured the farmers that his government is firmly behind the farmers and the Govt would help them to come out of their present sad plight. It is nothing but a mockery and an act of smearing salt in the wounds of the farmers," Thakre said.
