Maharashtra Legislative Council was adjourned for the day today after Opposition Congress and NCP refused to allow the House to function until a probe is ordered against "tainted" ministers in the BJP-led government under the Commission of Inquiry Act.

As soon as the House assembled for the day, Niranjan Davkhare, who was in the Chair, called for the commencement of Question Hour.

Leader of Opposition Dhananjay Munde of NCP soon got up from his seat and demanded a probe against the "tainted" ministers under the Commission of Inquiry Act.

In his support, Opposition members came to the Well of the House and shouted slogans against the BJP-Shiv Sena government.

"Despite proofs submitted against the ministers in the House, 'Mr Clean' Chief Minister (Devendra Fadnavis) is issuing clean chits to his Cabinet colleagues. Those accused of corruption are giving themselves a clean chit because they know the CM will back them despite their wrongdoings," Munde said.

"Unless the government accepts our demand of ordering an inquiry under a sitting High Court Judge, we will not let the House function," he asserted.

Manikrao Thakre (Congress), too, backed the demand.

Jayant Patil (Peasants and Workers Party) said, "if an inquiry can take place against former Revenue Minister Eknath Khadse and he had to resign, why not others."

Sharad Ranpise (Congress) said, "How can those accused of irregularities defend themselves and give themselves a clean chit? An inquiry should be conducted."

In the ensuing commotion, Davkhare first adjourned the proceedings for 15 minutes and later for 25 minutes.

When the Opposition refused to relent after the members reassembled, Chairman Ramraje Nimbalkar called for tabling of supplementary demands and then adjourned the House for the day.
