Against the backdrop of today's bus accident in Ratnagiri on the Mumbai-Goa highway which claimed 37 lives, the Opposition criticised the Maharashtra government in the legislative assembly for its "apathetic attitude" towards the regulation of traffic on the highway.

The issue was raised by the Leader of Opposition Eknath Khadse, who demanded a discussion on the matter by setting aside the day's business.

"The ill-fated vehicle was a luxury bus. There should be a set of policy for plying of luxury buses. Is that being followed?," he asked and demanded adequate compensation for the victims.

Subhash Desai (Shiv Sena) said the long-pending proposal of four laning of the highway was not being done.

Ganpatrao Deshmukh of Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) also demanded a detailed discussion on the issue.

As members demanded a discussion and statement from the government, the House was adjourned for 15 minutes.

Later, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said, "More information is being sought (about the accident). We are ready to discuss the matter in the house," he said.
