Maharashtra government is trying to hide its failure to properly implement the loan waiver for farmers by blaming banks, the Congress said today.
"The state government is not only a non-performer but also completely insensitive, and looking at the way it has gone about implementing its loan waiver decision, it seems it only intends to make a mockery of farmers," state Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant said here.
"The chief minister and his council of ministers are trying to put the onus on banks. When banks gave a list of 89 lakh farmers, loan waiver had not been announced. The CM announced the scheme on June 24 and then time and again made changes to eligibility conditions until he got the number of beneficiaries reduced," he said.
The Centre's deadline for linking bank accounts with Aadhar is December 31, and therefore the state government should not have asked banks to provide Aadhar numbers of beneficiaries of loan waiver as every account is not Aadhar-linked yet, the Congress spokesperson said.
"Delayed implementation of the loan waiver scheme has resulted in banks not issuing fresh agricultural loans," he said.
