Minister of State for Housing, Sachin Ahir while making the announcement here told reporters that government had also formulated a policy to decide criterion for slum-dwellers who will benefit from the decision.

The Democratic Front government of Congress and NCP had earlier this year amended the Maharashtra Slum Areas (Improvement, Clearance and Redevelopment) Act, 1971, changing the cut-off date for regularising about 400,000 illegal slums in the state from January 1, 1995, to January 1, 2000.

A Bill in this regard was passed by voice vote in the Legislative Assembly.
