Maharashtra government has put on hold tenders worth Rs 3,612 crore for housing projects in Mumbai and nearby areas under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMYA).

About 33,510 houses are to be constructed under the scheme aiming for affordable housing for urban poor.

Housing Minister Prakash Mehta said there is difference between rules and regulations of Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority (MHADA) and the central scheme.

"There is non availability of land in Mumbai metropolitan region and some loopholes have been found in tendering," he said.

"Everyone has not got a fair chance and only big builders have benefited," Mehta said.
