Brar, 78, had been attacked on Sunday night by some men, suspected to be Khalistan sympathisers, with knives while he was leaving a hotel in London. He arrived at the Mumbai airport along with his wife Meena today.

"We will step up the security cover given to Lt Gen K S Brar. The security will be as much as required," Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

Patil added that the state government had provided protection to Lt Gen Brar (retd) in the past as well.

Brar had led Operation Blue Star to flush out pro-Khalistan Sikh militants from the Golden Temple in 1984.

After their arrival here today, Brar, who had a bandage on his neck and cheek, and his wife were escorted to their vehicle amid tight security.
