Mariyam Asif Siddiqui, a class VI student who stood first in a contest to explain Bhagvad Gita, was felicitated by Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao at Raj Bhavan here.

Mariyam, a student of Cosmopolitan High School at Mira Road, had received the first prize in Gita Champions League competition, an inter-school competition for explaining the teachings of the holy book, which was organised by ISKCON last month.

A total of 195 schools, including 105 private and 90 municipal schools, participated in the contest.

The Governor had invited Mariyam alongwith her parents and teachers to Raj Bhavan yesterday to convey his appreciation to her, a Raj Bhavan spokesperson said today.

Applauding Mariyam's efforts, the Governor presented her a set of books.

Mariyam's achievement has been hailed in various sections of society, including political parties of different hues, as the vindication of the Hindu-Muslim unity.

She was also feted today by Mumbai unit Congress president Sanjay Nirupam who described her as the symbol of secularism.
