A man was Tuesday arrested for allegedly killing his pregnant unmarried daughter in Maharashtra's Jalna district, police said.

According to police, the victim, identified as Chhaya Dukre (20) worked in a private firm in Pune and was in a relationship with her colleague Shubham Wahade, a Jalgaon resident.

"The victim's family came to know that she was two months pregnant. They confronted her after which she revealed her relationship with Wahade. She told them he was willing to marry her," an official said.

He said that the victim's family, led by her father Samadhan (45), decided to get her married to Wahade and fixed the ceremony for Monday at Jalgaon.

"However, Wahade did not turn up and had switched off his phone. An infuriated Samadhan along with three of his relatives smothered Chhaya to death and disposed of the body near Dhawada village on Monday," the official said.

After the body was identified by Paradh police, a team under senior divisional police officer Sunil Jaybhay and police sub inspector Suddam Bhagwat began investigations.

"Samadhan was called for questioning. He later confessed to the killing, stating that the victim's act had brought disrepute to the family," the official said.

Three others, identified as Mahadev Ugle, Anna Lokhande and Ramdhan Dalvi, all relatives of Samadhan, were subsequently arrested, police said.
