The famous Maha Shivratri fair began today amidst adequate security measures at the Bhavnath temple in Junagadh city.

The five-day long fair is organised every year by the Junagadh district authority and the Junagadh Sadhu Samaj to mark the Maha Shivratri festival.

Junagadh municipal commissioner Manish Bhardwaj and SP Dipankar Trivedi remained present when the fair was inaugurated by the Sadhu Samaj.

Nearly 15 lakh people are expected to attend the fair.

Last year, a stampede had occured due to a traffic jam and nearly six people including two children were killed, while 20 others were injured.

Keeping this incident in mind, the police department has taken adequate security measures by deploying additional 300 jawans of the State Reserve Police, sources said.

The fair will conclude on the night of Maha Shivratri.
