The Maharashtra government has decided to use funds of the Mahatma Phule Backward Development Corporation to pay the solicitor fee for the purchase of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar house in London.
"The amount of Rs 3.1 crore, which is 10 per cent of the asking price for the house, will be paid as solicitor fee from the Mahatma Phule Magasvargiya Vikas Mahamandal's fund to Simon Ross, Managing Partner, Seddon Solicitors in London," a government resolution issued last week said.
"The government will reimburse the amount of Rs 3.1 crore to the Mahamandal," the GR said.
Maharashtra government had last month decided to buy the house in London where Ambedkar had lived in the 1920s, and convert it into a memorial-cum-museum.
State Education Minister Vinod Tawde, who was in London last month for a global academic conference, finalised the deal and made the announcement.
The 2,050 sq ft home, which was up for sale for the past few months, is where the architect of the Indian Constitution lived as a student of the London School of Economics in 1921-1922. It is situated at 10, King Henry's Road, NW3, London.
The memorial would inform the people about Ambedkar's life, works and contribution to the country's freedom struggle and subsequent public life, Tawde said.
