A woman from Bhiwandi in the district was allegedly tortured by her family members, following which four of them have been booked, police said today.

According to the complaint filed by the victim last night, she got married in December 2012 and things were normal for the initial two months.

"After that, the family members started troubling the victim for small things. The in-laws demanded money from the woman's parents and when the money was not given, they again started troubling her," Thane Police PRO Sukhada Narkar said in a statement issued today.

"When the woman delivered her first child in November 2013, neither her husband nor the in-laws visited her. When she delivered the second girl child in September 2016, her in-laws did not visit her," the official added.

"After some time, fed with up with the torture, the victim stated living with her parents, but the in-laws kept her daughters in their house," Narkar said.

As per the complaint, as the in-laws were reluctant to allow the two daughters to stay with the woman and her husband was planning for a second marriage, she approached the police.

"The woman was also taken to a religious place by her husband, who claimed that she was possessed by evil spirit," the official added.

A case under relevant sections of the IPC was registered against - Nadeem Ibrahim Gorekar, Mumtaz Ibrahim Gorekar, Nuzad Ibrahim Gorekar and Naveed Ibrahim Gorekar - in this regard and a probe is underway, said police.
