The legislature, the executive and the judiciary along with the media will have to function within their own institutional set-up in a democracy, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said today.

Inaugurating the 15th North East Region Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference here, she said in the Indian democratic system, the founding fathers of our Constitution had envisaged resilient institutions as its foundation.

She said legislative sovereignty and judicial review are two distinctive principles co-existing within our constitutional framework and this is a unique aspect of our democratic system.

"She felt that the legislature, the judiciary and the executive along with the media have to function within their own institutional set-up, according to the doctrine of separation of powers," a statement from Lok Sabha said.

Mahajan said the three most important organs of the state, the legislature, the executive, and the judiciary have been given defined roles in the Constitution itself to ensure a system of checks and balances.

"In a vibrant democracy, sustainable progress lasting peace and inclusive growth can be achieved only when all organs of our democracy act as a whole in a co-operative and complimentary manner and not as competitive centres, for achievement of the aspirations of the citizens," she said.
