There are around 1 lakh dormant or inactive co-operative units in Maharashtra and their registrations will be cancelled after identifying them, a State Minister said today.
Co-operative and Commerce Minister Chandrakant Patil said the State has around 1 lakh dormant or inactive co- operative units.
These dormant units consist of savings societies, co- operative societies and banks. They exist just in name. Such institutions would be identified during a drive to be carried out from September 1 to 30. Afer this a process will be started to cancel their registration, Patil said.
He was speaking after inaugurating a day-long workshop on urban co-operative banks in the state.
There was no alternative for development of the State without cooperatives. However, a number of irregularities and fraud have come to light in the co-operative field in recent years, the Minister said.
In order to make the co-operative movement a healthy one and free from corruption, certain important amendments would be brought in the relevant laws during the next few sessions of the legislature, he declared.
