The main accused in the murder of Congress corporator Manoj Mhatre was today arrested from a hill station in western Maharashtra, police said.

Prashant Mhatre, who was on the run since the murder of Manoj in mid-February, was traced to Panchgani in Satara district from where he was taken into custody by Anti- Extortion Cell of Thane police, an officer said.

Prashant is a cousin of Manoj, a three-time corporator who was also the leader of the House in the Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Corporation (BNMC).

Manoj and Prashant had a long standing political rivalry and this may have led to the murder, police said.

In the 2012 elections to BNMC, Prashant wanted to contest on a Congress ticket from the ward from where Manoj fought and won.

Seven people had been earlier arrested in the murder case.
