Two days after a priest associated with Maniram Das Chawni temple here was found dead, police today arrested one of his close disciples and claimed that he was murdered over some property dispute.

Superintendent of Police, Faizabad, R S Gautam said, "We have arrested Durgesh Tiwari, the main disciple of the Mahant, and he has confessed to killing the Mahant over some dispute connected with money and property."

45-year-old Mahant Vijay Ram Das, who was associated with Maniram Das Chawni temple, the city's largest and richest temple complex, was found murdered on its premises on August 29.

Das was the priest of Ganga Bhawan temple, part of Maniram Das Chawni Temple Trust.

A case against unknown persons was registered and the probe was handed over to a special team of Crime Branch.

Das was the fourth Mahant to be murdered in a year. The previous killings have turned out to be connected with temple's wealth and temple's official chair of chief priest, police sources said.
