Seena and his three accomplices were hiding in a house when it was surrounded by policemen, who asked them to surrender. Seena and others opened fire at police, who retaliated, Inspector General of Police Amarnath Pandey said.
Seena sustained injuries and died later, he said, adding one weapon has been recovered from the area.
His associates, however, managed to escape and police have launched a search for them, Pandey said.
Seena, wanted in nine murder cases, was the main suspect in the murder of JDS zilla panchayat member Krishnappa near Nelamangala a couple of months ago, police said.
