The main task of police is to maintain law and order in Ramnagar and nearby areas here following the death of a police constable in a clash recently, a senior police official said today.

"The main task of the police is to maintain law and order. Culprits will not be spared while no innocent person will be disturbed," IG, Lucknow Zone, Subhash Chand told reporters in front of the Bhupati Bhavan palace at Ramnagar.

When asked that hundreds of innocents of adjacent villages and some passersby were badly beaten by the cops after the death of the constable, the IG said that "no innocent will be touched but culprits will be taken to task under law".

Later he consulted with the officials there including SP Hira Lal, SDM Amethi RD Ram and others.

A constable was killed and six persons injured in a clash in Ramnagar between the alleged supporters of Anant Vikram Singh, the son of Congress MP Sanjay Singh, and police on September 14.

According to police, the clash took place as Anant Vikram's supporters gathered outside 'Bhupati Bhawan', the Singhs' ancestral house here, after hearing that the Congress MP and his wife Amita were to arrive in Amethi.

Anant Vikram occupies the residence with his mother and Sanjay Singh's first wife, Garima.

Sanjay Singh and his second wife Amita are locked in a dispute over the ancestral house with Anant Vikram and Garima.

Meanwhile, Sanjay Singh's daughter Shaivya Singh has alleged that the district administration is biased towards her father and Amita. She charged that Amita was responsible for the clash.
